Improving Brain Health: The Benefits of TMS

In East Memphis, patients are benefiting from an integrative approach to health and wellbeing. The Ly sisters, board-certified neurologists and physicians, offer a unique blend of Eastern and Western disciplines at their Mid-South practice. In addition to acupuncture, physical therapy, and nutritional/herbal supplements, they now offer a cutting-edge therapy called transcranial magnetic stimulation at Brain Body Balance TMS located at 529 North Highland.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive therapy that uses electromagnetic pulses to treat depression and anxiety. According to Dr. Helen Ly, it is a powerful tool that can also enhance cognitive function and restore sleep. “TMS is a form of neuromodulation that is like getting a tune-up for your brain,” she says.

Before administering TMS, patients undergo brain mapping to identify precise areas of the brain to treat. Specific TMS protocols are then selected by the physicians to individually tailor the treatment for best results. TMS is painless and feels like a tapping sensation on the head over the treatment area. Patients sit comfortably in a reclinable chair and hold still for a relaxing 15-20 minutes.

“Our accelerated TMS treatment regimen can help patients suffering from depression see significant improvement in just 10 days,” says Dr. Helen Ly. However, TMS is not for everyone. Those with a pacemaker/defibrillator, brain aneurysm coil, implanted devices, and frequent seizures cannot have TMS.

After three decades of robust research, TMS has been shown to provide long-lasting improvements with mood and brain function.

“Our integrative approach allows us to provide healthcare’s best of both worlds. Acupuncture can help “reset” the body, and TMS can help “balance” networks in the brain to restore function, health, and wellbeing,” says Dr. Amy Ly.

Improving brain health is critical to overall well being. TMS is a promising new therapy that can help individuals not only suffering from depression and anxiety, but it may also help improve cognitive functioning, Parkinson’s disease, and post-concussion syndrome.  At Brain Body Balance, patients can benefit from a powerful, cutting-edge tool that can restore balance to the brain in a drug-free, noninvasive manner.
