Anxiety

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about a number of different things. While the exact cause of GAD is not fully known, factors such as genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental stresses seem to contribute to its development.  Signs and symptoms of GAD may include:

  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Feeling nervous, irritable, or on edge
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation), sweating, and/or trembling
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems

Transcranial magnetic stimulation administers short pulses of a magnetic field to the areas of the brain that regulates mood.  By balancing the activity in specific areas of the frontal lobe of the brain (e.g. stimulating the inactive or disrupted area of the brain or suppressing the overactive area of the brain), TMS can reduce symptoms of anxiety.
